Empire State Building History
William Lamb designed the Empire State Building, and construction of the building began in 1930. When it was finished in 1931, it was the tallest building in the world. When the World Trade Center was built in 1973, it replaced the Empire State Building as the tallest building in the world; after the 9/11 attacks, the Empire State Building returned to the top of the list of tallest NYC buildings. Construction of One World Trade Center bumped the Empire State Building from the top of the list of the tallest buildings in New York in 2012.
